GeoURL meets Google Maps

Leigh Dodds made a super neat GeoURL to Google Maps converter using the RSS feeds. Thanks Leigh, that's awesome! :-)

Thanks for the suggestions for the lat/long coding in the RSS feeds by the way. I'll add some of the more "standard ways"...

You guys have a terrific idea, and are implementing it beautifully — but are butting up against a great difficulty: GeoURL is being randomly spammed by all kinds of people entering sites that are not related to the locations (or any location)! To get around the apparently endemic malevolence of the human race, what's needed seems to be insurmountable in the present state-of-the-art: a routine that would parse the webpages entered, to reject those that were not related to the place in question. I wish I had the computer savvy to help out.

I (will have) added (when the site refreshes from CVS in a few hours) support to the feed validator[0] for geourl, geo, and Matt Croydon's icbm[1]. Nobody seems to be very specific about the values they expect, so I just called them all -90 <= latitude <= 90 and -180 <= longitude <= 180. If that's wrong, shout at the feedvalidator-users list[2], and I'll fix it.

I've just ping in your site, but my place is nowhere near "EL TABOR", it might be near COLINA CAMPESTRE o NIZA, if you could correct it, i would be vary happy

When is there a "network link" for "google earth" availible? This could be a boost for the use of a geourl. Blogwise is doing that with geocoded blogs allready.

Seems to be broken, unfortunately. Slashdot-type effect?

It would be great if somebody knew how to make a KML file for GeoURL to be used on GoogleEarth!

Chris M.: "It would be great if somebody knew how to make a KML file for GeoURL to be used on GoogleEarth!"

well, I made something very similar to this googlemaps example, but the result is served as a KML for Google Earth :)

I also made a googlemap site locator tool, but i didn't get much input. So I also started adding a few sites from geourl every day. I also show links as lines if two sites that are on the map link to each other according to technorati.

Have you seen the GeoURL Yahoo! Mapping hack at http://www.livejournal.com/users/premshree/84886.html ?

Man you guys have a wicked idea!

Good idea!

I like this geourl tool very much - and every time I create a new site, I add it immediately to your database.
BUT - why are you offline so often? Do you need more powerful servers? Maybe you should add "Donate" buttons on some places...
I would definitely donate an amount.

Google maps search input allows to enter GeoRSS and KML URLs. So viewing all sites nearby is very simple, just take your geourl, append ";format=rss10" and paste it to google maps. Recentering would be possible if descriptions would include a recenter-link in case of "format=rss10")
